What is Full Form of NASA

NASA Full Form Name: National Aeronautics and Space Administration

NASA Full Form Name is National Aeronautics and Space Administration. It is a US government agency responsible for aerospace research, aeronautics, and space programs.

NASA has been helping scientists explore and understand the solar system by sending satellites, space shuttles, and humans into space. Headquartered in Washington D.C., NASA has established several centers in the US with approximately 18,000 people working for it. Let’s shed some light on the full form of NASA.

Brief history of NASA: the complete Full form of NASA,

NASA was formed in 1958 when Dwight D. Eisenhower was the President of the United States. Prior to the formation of NASA, there was a federal agency called NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) that dealt with space activities in the country.

National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics:

It was a United States federal agency established in 1915 to promote aeronautical research in the country. During 1940–1950, NACA was building experimental rocket aircraft in collaboration with the Bell Aircraft Company.

The most important experimental supersonic aircraft built by this collaboration is the Bell X-1. This was built to obtain some flight data in the transonic speed range conditions. Then there was a challenge for NACA during 1957-58 (which is called the International Geophysical Year) to launch a satellite into space. This had led to Project Vanguard.

Vanguard Project:

It was a program of the United States Naval Research Laboratory that intended to launch the first artificial satellite using a state-of-the-art rocket.

After the launch of Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite of the space superpower USSR (expanded as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) in 1957, there was a crisis in the United States of America (nicknamed the Sputnik Crisis).

The American public had some kind of anxiety and fear that there was a very significant technology gap between the United States and the USSR. The United States Congress strongly felt the threat to the national security and technological leadership of the United States.

In response to the Sputnik launch, the US had to restart the Explorers Program that was previously proposed by the Army Ballistic Missile Agency.

Subsequently, collaboration between the Naval Research Laboratory and the Army Ballistic Missile Agency was instrumental in launching Explorer 1, the first American satellite, which was achieved after two failed launch attempts.

Later, in 1958, the NACA convened a meeting of the Special Committee on Space Technology headed by scientist and administrator Horton Guyford Stever.

The mandate given to the committee was to coordinate with the various departments of the federal government, universities, and private companies in the United States to draw experience and bring them together to develop a national space program. Eventually, the United States Congress passed the National Aeronautics and Space Act bill of 1958 and a new agency called the National Aeronautics and Space Administration was formed, which would only focus on space research.

Therefore, NACA was dissolved in October 1958 and a new space agency called NASA became operational.

NASA manned missions:

NASA has sent more than 100 successful manned flights to space since its inception. The following is a brief introduction to various manned spaceflight programs successfully completed by NASA.

Mercury Project:

It was NASA’s first manned space flight program that began in 1959. The main goal of this project was to send a human into low Earth orbit (before the Soviet Union did) and return the person to save. The Mercury project began immediately after the launch of Sputnik 1 (the first artificial satellite sent by the Soviet Union in 1957). As mentioned above, the launch of Sputnik 1 by the Russians had created a crisis in the US that led to the space race.

The Mercury spacecraft was built by McDonnell Aircraft Corporation and carried oxygen, food, and water in a pressurized cabin. The Mercury flights had been launched at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, which used Atlas D and Redstone missiles. As a safety measure, the capsule was installed in an escape rocket that could drive the crew away from the launch vehicle in the event of a flight failure. This project ended in 1963 after sending six American astronauts into space.

Gemini Project:

It was NASA’s second human space flight program initiated in 1961. The main objective of this project was to develop the techniques required during space travel and to use those techniques that could support the Apollo mission of landing men on the Moon. The Gemini Project demonstrated various techniques such as extravehicular activity, orbital maneuvers, encounters and docking. As these techniques were already demonstrated by this project, Apollo continued with its main mission and skipped these exploratory operations.

All Gemini flights were launched using a modified ICBM called the Gemini Titan II. The launches took place at Launch Complex 19 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Gemini’s rigor was good enough that the United States Air Force had plans to use it for a manned classroom laboratory program as well. The Gemini Project was ably supported by the astronaut corps that included Mercury Seven, Astronaut Class of 1963, and New Nine (NASA’s Astronaut Group 2). The Gemini Project was completed in 1966.

Apollo Program (Apollo Project):

It was NASA’s 3rd human space flight program started in 1961. The main goal of this project was to put humans on the surface of the moon and that goal was successfully achieved in 1969. The Apollo program was ably supported by the Gemini Program which developed keyspace travel techniques that proved crucial to the success of the Apollo Project. Rockets of the Saturn family were used for this project which included three versions, namely Saturn I, Saturn V and Saturn IB.

Project Apollo had a major setback in 1967 when a fire broke out in the command / service module cabin during a launch test that killed the crew of 3 astronauts. Despite this setback, the Apollo program achieved its goal of landing man on the moon with Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969. Launched by the human-rated Saturn V from the John F. Kennedy Space Center, Apollo 11 it was NASA’s fifth manned mission. take a three-member crew on a lunar module to the moon. History was made on July 20, 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the Lunar Module and walked on the lunar surface. Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the surface of the moon. Subsequently, NASA conducted five Apollo missions that brought 12 men to the surface of the moon, and the project ended in December 1972.

Skylab:

Skylab was the first space station in the US It had a solar observatory, a workshop, and other systems. Skylab orbited the Earth between 1973 and 1979. Skylab was launched with the help of the Saturn V rocket that had a weight of around 77 tons. NASA conducted three manned missions from 1973 to 1974 and numerous scientific experiments were conducted.

The most remarkable feat of the Skylab experiments is that the crew were able to find coronal holes in the Sun. They also took thousands of photos of Earth that were used to study various resources on Earth. However, in 1979 Skylab disintegrated upon entering Earth’s atmosphere and the project came to an end.

Apollo Soyuz Test Project (shortly ASTP):

ASTP was considered the policy of detente (it is a French term that means (“relaxation”). This project marked the end of the cold war and the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union that began in 1957. During this project Both the Soviet Union and the United States had conducted joint science experiments that paved the way for future collaboration between the two nations, including the International Space Station and the Shuttle-Mir Program.

Shuttle – Mir Program:

It was the joint mission between the United States and Russia in which the American space shuttles visited a Russian space station (Mir). This program also allowed Russian cosmonauts to fly space shuttles and American astronauts to fly in a Soyuz spacecraft. The intention was to unite the two space powers and save the cold war that existed between the two.

There were 11 Space Shuttle missions and one joint Soyuz flight was conducted during the period 1994-1998. The Shuttle-Mir Program was seen as the springboard for the construction of the International Space Station.

Space Shuttle Program (Space Transportation System):

In the history of space technology, the Shuttle was the only manned spacecraft that was able to orbit the low ground, re-enter Earth’s atmosphere, and land safely. NASA has built six vehicles under this program, namely Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavor. This particular program also demonstrated reusable launch vehicle technology. However, NASA has retired the space shuttles after facing two fatal accidents that led to the disappearance of 14 astronauts.

NASA for the student community:

NASA supports and encourages students at the school who are academically bright and have an interest in space science. He has been awarding various internships, scholarships, and scholarships to deserving students to pursue their careers in space science and technology. It also regularly conducts contests and workshops for the student community.

Full Form of NASA : National Aeronautics and Space Act

Full Form of NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Act. Actually, it is the federal statue of the United States of America that NASA created. The Select Committee on Astronautics and Space Exploration of the United States created this law on 07-29-1958 and a signature of then-President Eisenhower gave birth to NASA.

The newly created space agency was mandated to conduct United States space and aeronautical activities.

Before the enactment of the National Aeronautics and Space Act, space exploration was carried out by military establishments in the US. But after the Sputnik crisis, the American public firmly believed that the military infrastructure was quite incapable. to explore space and that the United States lacked the space race with Soviet Russia. If you look in history, you will understand that the launch of Sputnik (the first satellite to orbit the Earth) had been the only reason for the enactment of this law.
