Full Form of UPA:
United Progressive Alliance
UPA Full Form is United Progressive Alliance. UPA refers to the coalition or collaboration of a number of Indian political parties that are basically centre-left in their adopted views and ethics. The coalition was formed for the first time in 2004. This coalition was formed because no political party had gained an absolute majority of seats in the 2004 general elections in India. It was initiated by INC ( Indian National Congress ). The first chairperson of UPA is Sonia Gandhi. Not many parties were actively involved in the UPA, rather it was supported from outside by political parties.
Left Front, SP ( Samajwadi Party), BSP ( Bahujan Samaj Party ), AIADMK ( All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ), Janata Dal (Secular) were some parties that provided external support to UPA. Among them, Left Front had the most number (59) of MPs. But, after some time, UPA started to break apart as supporting parties started to withdraw their alliance.
Left Front withdrew their support regarding the nuclear deal between India and United States of America. During its ruling reign of 10 years (2004-2014), UPA was involved in numerous controversies like Commonwealth Games Scam, Coalgate Scam, Cash for Vote Scam in the parliament etc. As a result, its acceptance and reliability among common people started to decrease and UPA could manage to secure a handful of seats in the 2014 general elections.
