Full Form of RSS is Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. RSS is a right wing organization that is often considered as the parent organization to one of the two main political parties in India, the Bhartiya Janta Party (abbreviated as BJP). It is essentially a Hindu organization. It was established by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. The organization was established in the year 1925. The initial emphasis of the organization was to facilitate character training to people by means of Hindu ideologies and motivate people to come together and contribute to the creation of a Hindu Nation (also known as Hindu Rashtra). Thus, the main emphasis is on the principles and values of the Indian culture and its traditions.
RSS has grown into a big, prominent organization giving way to scores of affiliated organizations that carry out works along the lines of RSS’s ideologies. RSS claims itself to be a non-governmental organization and has founded several charities, clubs, and schools to disseminate its ideologies to the people. During the British rule, the RSS was banned. The ban was lifted post-independence only to be placed again thrice—in the year 1948 when Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by a former RSS worker, then during the period 1975-77 at the time of emergency, then in the year 1992 when Babri Masjid was demolished. The ban of the year 1948 was lifted on a condition that RSS would function only as a cultural organization.
The organization, though in principal being a cultural organization, has been actively engaged in the independence movements, and following which, political movements. It is said to have a huge influence on the current ruling party of the country, BJP and this is quite evident from the manifesto of the latter that bullets construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya and other goals in pursuance of the Hindutva ideology. Despite being a prominent part of history, it has been criticized as an orthodox group, attempting to impose regressive conventional tenets upon the people. Nevertheless, RSS has a huge following among masses.
