NCC Full Form is National Cadet Corps. NCC refers to the Cadet Corps of the Indian military. It has its headquarters in New Delhi. It is available for college and school students. Students participate on a voluntary basis. NCC is an organization that comprises of the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force. It engages the younger generation and grooms them into patriotic and disciplined citizens.

In simple terms, NCC is a voluntary organization in India which picks cadets from universities, colleges, and high schools within India. The cadets are then given the basics of military training which normally involves in parades or small arms. Though these cadets are not eligible to actively serve the military, they get preference over other candidates during the selection process.

The cadet corps of the military of India is known as the NCC or National Cadet Corps. Its head office can be found in Delhi. The students from colleges as well as schools can take part in it on the voluntary basis. The main focus of this tri-service organization lies on grooming the nation’s youth and make them patriotic and disciplined citizens. From throughout the nation, the cadets volunteer into it from all universities, colleges and high schools.

The basic training of military nature is provided to the cadets in terms of parades and small arms.  Although the cadets and officers of the NCC do not provide active service to the military after their course is completed, more preference is given to them as compared to the normal students when selections are done in terms of their achievement in the corps. The NCC organization has been active since the year 1948. Currently, it contains more than thirteen hundred thousand corps.

History of NCC

The first nation where the NCC started was Germany. In India, this organization’s origin can be found in the University Corps. The UC for formed under the defence act passed in the year 1917. During that time, the main aim was to decrease the shortage created in the Army. The UTC or University Training Corps replaced the UC after the passing of the Territorial Act in the year 1920. Its focus was in raising the UTC’s status and making it more attractive and popular among the country’s youth.

Pandit Kunzru, in 1948, suggested the formation of an organization in colleges and schools at the national level, in order to train the youth in a better manner. This was ultimately accepted by the then Governor General, and the NCC was formed. After the war in the year 1971, the syllabus of the NCC was subjected to revision. After this, a large amount of stress is laid by the syllabus to develop leadership and other qualities like an officer among the cadets. The tough training of the military nature that the cadets received was reduced. It started giving more emphasis on additional fields like the management of youth and social services.

Organizational Structure of NCC

The head of the NCC is a Director General. Theo more Director Generals, having the rank of two stars assists the head. Additionally, a certain number of civil officers as well as five officers of the Brigadier level also aids in assisting the NCC’s head. There are, in total seventeen directorates. These are situated in AP, Delhi, Kashmir, Lakshadweep, Kerela, Chhattisgarh, MP, Northeast states like Nagaland, Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh; Rajasthan, UP, Sikkim and West Bengal. These are also located in Uttrakhand, Pondicherry, TN, Chandigarh, Haryana, HP, Punjab, Odessa, Maharashtra, etc. The directorates are further subdivided into units. There are seven hundred and eighty-eight units in total. These units are segmented into 3 services groups, which are Air, Naval, and Army. Out of 788, sixty-one of them consist of air units, sixty of them are dedicated to naval and the rest are the Army.

Training and Certifications offered by NCC

The training period for the senior division extends to three years, while the same is two years for the junior division. The training takes place every week for four hours. During the vaccinations in schools or colleges, it does not take place. A training camp is organized every year for nine to ten days, and every cadet needs to participate in it. This training camp is referred to as NCAT or National Combined Annual Training Camp. A certification is received by those who successfully complete the training camp. The NCC consists of 3 certifications. These are discussed below:

Certification A

The cadets of the junior divisions, that is, those belonging to class eighth and ninth can obtain this certification. It cannot be obtained by those who have already passed these classes. For obtaining it, a cadet’s attendance in the training periods in accordance with the syllabus of all wings of the 1st and 2nd years of the NCC’s junior division must be at least seventy-five percent. Additionally, 1 annual training camp must be attended by the cadet.

Certification B

Those cadets who are in the senior division, that is, who are in classes tenth, eleventh and twelfth are eligible to appear for this certification exam. The cadets who are in the second year can appear in it. The attendance of the candidate in the training periods must be at least seventy-five percent. Those cadets who already have Certification A obtain ten bonus marks. The cadets belonging to the air wing are required to do at least ten glide launches for passing the exam successfully.

Certification C

For every cadet in the NCC, the certification C holds the highest importance. Those cadets who are in the third year of their training period can appear in this certification exam. It is essential for every cadet appearing in this exam to possess the B certification. Additionally, he or she must have attended the youth exchange programs, attachment training, the centrally organized camp, foreign cruise, and national integration camp.
