BMW was originally formed by restructuring an aircraft engine manufacturing company called Rapp Motorenwerke. Before the World War – I, Rapp Motorenwerke was producing aircraft engines. Following the restructuring of the manufacturing firm the Rapp Motorenwerke aircraft, BMW was founded in the year of 1917.
However, post-World War I, the ignominious Treaty of Versailles prohibited BMW from manufacturing aircraft engine. The prohibitions imposed by the Treaty started to lift by the time of 1923, the company switched to the manufacturing of motorcycles and then of automobiles from the year 1928. Dixi, which was based on the design of Austin 7, was the first car successfully manufactured and launched on the road under the brand BMW.
BMW produced some of the most remarkable aircraft engines after lifting of restrictions. Some of its successful engines that were produced at the time around the World War II were the BMW 132 and BMW 801. These engines were heavily relied upon during the world war and due to that, the company shot to fame as a reputable aircraft engine manufacturing company. One of the first histories that brought fame to the company was the airplane engine, which contributed to the record altitude of over 32,000 feet.
