Food Safety and Standards Authority of India
FSSAI Full Form is Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. FSSAI is a government organization that deals with the duty of supervision over food manufacturing, processing, distribution , sell and ensures that every citizen consumes safe and healthy food. This organization or agency is administered by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India. Formed in 2011 and headquartered in New Delhi, FSSAI sets and exercises scientific standards not only for the food articles produced inside the country but also on those that are imported.
FSSAI was formed primarily to supervise and ensure the welfare of public health. Each food article is to be tested in the laboratories of FSSAI before those food articles can be introduced to the market for sale. FSSAI has 72 local laboratories and a total of 4 referral laboratories across the country. Food articles are brought to those laboratories and then they are tested and measured according to set scientific standards.
Development of technically defined standards for foods, data collection on food consumption and on safety related parameters of the food articles, formation of standards guidelines for testing and accreditation of food, and promotion of safety and standards of food are the principle functions of FSSAI. The latest high-profile case on food safety, exercised by FSSAI, was the ban on Maggi noodles.
