FACEBOOK Full Form? The term FACEBOOK does not have a full form. Facebook is an online social networking service and a for-profit corporation headquartered at Menlo park, in California, the United States of America. The service was launched in the year 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his Harvard batch mates, namely: Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, Andrew McCollum, and Chris Hughes. The original website provided for limited membership, restricted to Harvard students, however, later it was opened to other higher education colleges in the Boston area, Stanford University, and the Ivy League schools. It eventually gathered immense support from students of various universities and expanded to high school students.
Since the year 2006, any person at or above the age of 13 is eligible for registration on Facebook, though age variations exist depending upon regional laws. The name “facebook” is derived from the face book directories that are usually given to students in the United States’ universities. Facebook is an international service and can be accessed on laptops, desktops, smartphones, tablets over the mobile networks and the Internet. Upon registering on Facebook, users are allowed to create and modify their user profile reflecting their name, schools, occupation, and so on.
Users can be “friends” with other facebook users, receive notifications, exchange messages as well as photos and videos, use software applications (commonly known as apps) and receive other notifications. Users can create groups or pages to bring together people with similar interests. Such pages and groups can besubsumed under various specified categories. Facebook generates most of its revenue from paid advertisements. There are a few major controversies linked to facebook such as the Real-name policy. Facebook uses a real-name policy for the purposes of user profiles. Such policy does not allow users to use nicknames or adopted names and use of such names would lead suspension of the account unless the user provides an authentic identification proof. Another controversy was the infamous “Free Basics” issue in India.
In early 2016, TRAI decided against differential data pricing for a limited number of services and thus, ended the zero-rating platforms in the country. Facebook’s Free Basics program hit the rock due to this ruling, as it had announced an engagement with Reliance Communications to launch the program in the country.
