For this, the DJs spend hours in record shops hunting for good tracks that they can mix and they listen to the music to find the good spots for transition into the next track.
DIFFERENT EQUIPMENTS USED BY DJs
In order to enable smooth switchover from one track to the other, the deejays use various equipments to achieve the desired effects. The traditional way adopted by DJs is using two turntables with vinyl records to mix music and this is attached to a DJ mixer. The DJ has headphones on and through that he listens and gauges the moment when the beats can be blended with the new track. This is a highly skilled job; else the music falls flat and does not seem properly streamed.
- Turntables: These are the basic equipments used to make music. By replacing the rubber matting on the turntable with slip-mat the DJ manipulates the playback speed of the record by hand. The speed adjustment enables the DJ to match the tempo of the two different tracks without clashing the beats or rhythm. This technique is called “beat-matching”. Music is also created by converting the turntables into musical instruments and developing notes by techniques like beat juggling, scratching, etc.
- CDJs: These are sophisticated digital media players for DJ routine. They are somewhat larger jog wheels teamed with pitch control that enables the DJ to manipulate the beats through the playback of digital files rather than vinyl records.
- Headphones: DJs use headphones that are different from normal use. They are specially designed to bar all outside sounds so that the DJ can catch the beats from the players well for mixing.
- DJ Mixers: These are small consoles used for audio mixing. They are usually attached to the turntables to help in synchronizing the beats and rhythm of tracks from different turntables.
- DJ music software: With advanced technology, it is now possible to record and play music with all the mixing effects through the computer. For the convenience of the DJs, music that is stored digitally on the laptop can be played back with ease without having the need to carry heavy instruments like the turntables and mixers or the vinyl records. The software installed in the laptop allows the DJ to play 2 audio files simultaneously and see the beats in the waveform. These waves can be interpreted by the DJ to understand the rhythm and the software automatically synchronizes the beats to give a streamline performance.
Other additional equipments are controllers, electronic musical keyboards, microphone to announce the songs and have a live chat with the audience, electronic sound effect units (equalizer, chorus, etc)
TECHNIQUES AND STYLES
A good DJ is the one who can produce mind blowing music from some existing tracks. The skill lies in adapting techniques like equalizing, cueing and audio mix of two or more soundtracks. Radio DJs are not required to follow intricate methods to get good music. However, club DJs play to a live audience and thus a smooth transition of music is necessary. They use methods like beat-matching, slip-cueing, and phrasing (mixing of high and low tempo beats) in order to keep the energy level constant on the dance floor. Beat juggling, back spinning, scratching, cutting, needle drop are some techniques used on the turntable. Harmonic Mixing is selected by more professional DJs for songs selection that are in matching musical notes.
