Deputy Inspector General of Police
DIG Full Form is Deputy Inspector General of Police. Responsibilities and Functions of a DIG are concerned with the offense against weaker section, tribals, women, juveniles, narcotic cases, missing persons, and more. In fact, DIG position holds 3-star rank in IPS or Indian Police Service and is under an IGP or Inspector General of Police. With regards to ranking, the DIG rank is almost equal to Brigadier rank in India Army. DIG can also be called as Joint Commissioner of Police or JCP.
Police system in India and various other countries functions as per a systematic hierarchy of officials who are tasked with specific duties and responsibilities. One such official we are going to talk about is a Deputy Inspector General of Police, who will hereinafter be referred to as DGP throughout the article. A DIG a high ranking police official who is regarded with great esteem and fear. He or she is tasked with major responsibilities towards the police system. In the following paragraphs, the position of a DIG shall be dealt with in respect of those countries where the position exists. So, here we go!
In India, a DIG is looked up with respect and fear. He is considered one of the strongest and most influential individuals in the police system and therefore, commands a lot of authority. A DIG is essentially a one-star rank, whose position is just below to that of Inspector general of Police. It is selective rank and only those officers from the Indian Police Service (Abbreviated as IPS) cadre, who have successfully served as Deputy Commissioner of Police or Senior Superintendent of Police are eligible to be promoted to the rank of a DIG. As far as the number of DIGs is concerned, there is no prescribed limit to it. It is up to the discretion of the State to have as many DIGs as it desires and requires. Considering the authority the position of a DIG commands, they are handsomely paid along with glittering remunerations.
In the Kenyan Police system, a DIG is a three-star rank official of the National Police Service. Just like in the case of India, a DIG is just below the Inspector General and above the Senior Assistant inspector general officer. There are two officers who are placed in these positions and they respectively steer control over the Administration Police Service and the Kenya Police Service.
Pakistan has a similar police system as that of India. There too a DIG is a one-star rank officer in the Police Service of Pakistan.
Sri Lankan DIG
In Sri Lanka, a DIG is actually a senior gazette officer. He is placed at the third most senior rank in the elite Sri Lanka Police Service. He ranks just below the Senior Deputy Inspector general of Police (abbreviated as SDIG) and just above the Senior Superintendent of Police (Abbreviated as SSP). Both of the positions were established in the 1980s. A DIG is responsible for taking on matters of policing in a province or district.
