The foundation of the CIG can be traced to the Beijing Institute of Geology which was the result of an amalgamation of the geology departments of Peking University, Tsinghua University, Tangshan university, and Tianjin University. In the 1950s, the university was one of the 16 key universities in China. Due to Cultural revolution, the operations of the university were suspended. In the year 1975, the campus moved to Wuhan from Beijing and was named as Wuhan College of Geology. Even today, the Ministry of Education regards both the campus as components of an individual university.
