Central Board of Excise and Customs
CBEC Full Form is Central Board of Excise and Customs. CBEC is a central organization for administering and controlling excise duties, customs duties, service tax issues and issues about narcotics in India. CBEC operates under the parent agency named Department of Revenue of Ministry of Finance of India. Founded in 1944, CBEC inherited its operational curriculum and duties from Customs and Central Excise Department that was active during the British Rule in India.
It’s a civilian agency and it is also related to the enforcement of law. CBEC is administered by a chairperson and other six members. A total of 72,891 officers (19,137 gazetted officers and 53754 non-gazetted officers) work for CBEC. A collection of local, national and international customs duty, collection o adequate service tax amounts and excise duty, prevention of smuggling on the local, national and international basis, and prevention of trafficking of illegal substances like drugs are the primary and principle functions of CBEC.
It also sets standards for the determination of the levels of forgery, smuggling, trafficking and willful avoidance of payment for service taxes or other duty payments. It also helps to create and enforce various norms and regulations. CBEC has issued a notification that in order to fill documents through the medium of ICEGATE, use of digital signature of the respective individual will be mandatory with effective from 1st January 2016.
