BUMS Full Form is Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery. BUMS refers to an undergraduate degree programme, which provides an elaborate course in the area of Unani medicine and surgery. The degree is awarded after a student has finished 5.5 years in the academic programme, which comprises 4.5 years of academic session and 1 year of the internship programme. The degree course can be pursued through a distance education system. The elementary eligibility requirement to enrol in a BUMS course is a qualification of the 10+2 or any equivalent examination with minimum 50 percent marks. The candidates must have had Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in 12th class. Those students who have proficiency in Urdu or had Urdu as their subject in 12th are usually given preference.
The Central Council of Indian Medicine (abbreviated as CCIM) is the primary regulatory body for Unani education in India. There are only 35 institutions that offer BUMS courses in India. Students are taught Venesection, Turkish bath, Massage, Cupping, Regimental Therapy, Purging, Leeching, Surgery, etc. There are many professional opportunities available to a BUMS graduate such as that of a Spa director, Pharmacist, therapist, Scientist, Public Health Specialist, Consultant, etc.
