Border Security Force
BSF Full Form is Border Security Force. BSF is the main border guarding force operational in India. It is part of the five Union of India’ Central Armed police Forces (abbreviated as CRPF), which was created in the backdrop of the 1965 war for the purposes of ensuring the protection of the borders of the country. BSF is charged with the duty to defend Indian borders during peace times as well as prevent transnational crime. It is essentially a Central government agency functioning under the aegis of the Ministry of Home Affairs. BSF is presently the biggest border guarding force in the world and is known as the First Wall of Defence.
The BSF was engaged in Operation Blue Star, Operation Vijay, Operation Black Thunder, the Indo-Pakistani War 1971, Operation Prakarm, etc. The role of the BSF during peacetime is the promotion of a sense of security among those who live in the border areas; prevention of smuggling and other related illegal activities in the border areas; discharge of anti-infiltration responsibilities; a collection of trans-border intelligence, and prevention of unauthorised entry into or outside from India.
The role of the BSF during wartime include holding ground in areas assigned; maintaining law and Order situation in enemy territories controlled by the Army; protection of Prisoners of War; providing assistance in the monitoring of refugees; and performance of special tasks that are associated with intelligence such as conducting raids, etc. BSF has played an overwhelming role in securing Indian borders, which has been duly acknowledged. BSF’s personnel has been the recipient of awards such as Mahavir Chakra, Vir Chakra, arjuna Awards, Padma Bhushan, President’s Police medal for Gallantry, etc.
